What to look for in a TPS check API
Before diving into individual providers, here is what actually matters when choosing a TPS/CTPS checking service:
- TPS and CTPS in a single call. Some providers charge separately for each register. You want both included.
- Data freshness. TPS registrations change daily. Your provider should update from the official registers at least once a day.
- A proper API. REST endpoints with JSON responses, clear authentication, and decent documentation. Not a file upload portal with a checkbox labelled "API available."
- Transparent pricing. If you have to email a sales team to find out what it costs, that is a red flag for SMBs.
- Rate limits and scalability. Can you run 10,000 checks in an hour, or will you hit a wall at 60 per minute?
- Audit trails. The ICO can ask for evidence that you screened your lists. Good providers log every check.
- Extra intelligence. Line type (mobile vs landline), carrier, and location data can help you clean your data beyond just TPS status.
With that framework in mind, here are the main contenders.
The providers compared
1. TPS Services (tpsservices.co.uk)
Overview: TPS Services, operated by Internet Web Telecom, is one of the more established platforms. It offers a fully automated screening system with both a web portal and API access. It supports large file uploads, CRM integration, and provides detailed compliance reports with audit trails.
Pricing: Credit-based. No per-lookup fee structure is published openly; the minimum charge is around £5.10 for 250 numbers. Credits can be purchased in flexible quantities and do not expire. A free trial of 250 credits is available.
Strengths: - Mature platform with years in the market - Supports high-volume batch screening - Includes HLR validation and DNC management - Free trial to evaluate the service - Daily register updates
Weaknesses: - Pricing is not straightforward to find on the website - The platform feels dated compared to newer alternatives - API documentation is limited
Best for: Established call centres that already have a workflow built around file-based batch screening.
2. TPS Online / TPSChecker (tpschecker.co.uk)
Overview: Run by Quartz Data Services, TPSChecker provides a free online interface for single or small-batch checks. A basic account offers 10 free checks per day. Paid credit packages come with bonus credits (around 30% extra), and the service also provides an Excel add-in and a simple API.
Pricing: Free for up to 10 checks per day. Paid credit packs range from 325 checks for £4.25+VAT to 6,500 checks for £35+VAT. Credits include a loyalty bonus and never expire.
Strengths: - Genuinely useful free tier for very low-volume users - Credit packages are affordable for small businesses - Excel add-in is helpful for non-technical users - Bonus credits make the effective cost lower than it looks
Weaknesses: - The API is basic and not well documented - Limited to small-batch workflows at the free tier - No phone intelligence or additional data beyond TPS/CTPS status - The interface has not been modernised recently
Best for: Sole traders or micro-businesses who need occasional, low-volume checking without committing to a subscription.
3. 121ProData (121prodata.co.uk)
Overview: 121ProData offers a self-service web portal and API for TPS and CTPS checks. It supports single-number lookups and bulk CSV uploads, with results returned in seconds. All checks screen both registers automatically, and the service maintains auditable logs.
Pricing: Pay-as-you-go credits with no minimum order. Costs start at £3 for 1,000 checks (0.3p per number) and drop to 0.15p per number at 100,000 credits. Bulk packages include bonus credits. Unlimited subscriptions are available on request.
Strengths: - Competitive pricing, especially at volume - No minimum order requirement - Both TPS and CTPS included at no extra cost - Audit logging for compliance evidence - 24/7 availability with daily data updates
Weaknesses: - No CRM integrations mentioned - API documentation is not publicly showcased - The platform is functional but not developer-focused - No free tier
Best for: Cost-conscious businesses that primarily need bulk checking at the lowest per-number price.
4. Data8 (data-8.co.uk)
Overview: Data8 is an enterprise-grade data quality platform. TPS and CTPS checking is one part of a broader suite that includes address validation, email verification, and bank detail checking. It offers both real-time API and batch processing, with deep integrations into Salesforce and Microsoft Dynamics 365.
Pricing: Not published publicly. Per-lookup pricing or annual licence. The per-lookup cost for TPS and CTPS is approximately £5 per 1,000 for each register separately, meaning £10 per 1,000 if you need both.
Strengths: - Native CRM integrations (Salesforce, Dynamics 365) are excellent - Broad data quality offering beyond TPS - Daily register updates - Established enterprise reputation
Weaknesses: - TPS and CTPS are charged separately, doubling the cost compared to combined providers - No transparent public pricing; you need to contact sales - Overkill for businesses that only need TPS/CTPS checking - No free tier
Best for: Enterprise teams already using Microsoft Dynamics or Salesforce who want TPS checking embedded in their CRM workflow alongside other data quality tools.
5. CallValidate / Datatopia (datasoap.co.uk)
Overview: DataSoap offers a comprehensive data quality platform that includes TPS and CTPS checks alongside other services. The platform supports bulk list screening via portal or API. Results include flags and opt-out dates. An Outlook plugin is also available for on-the-fly checking.
Pricing: Batch TPS checks start from around 75p per 1,000 numbers according to marketing materials. However, TPS and CTPS are priced separately: TPS at £5 per 1,000 and CTPS at £7.50 per 1,000, totalling £12.50 per 1,000 for both registers. Volume discounts are available but not published openly.
Strengths: - Broad data cleansing platform - Returns opt-out dates alongside TPS status - Outlook plugin is a useful touch for sales teams - Daily register updates
Weaknesses: - Pricing structure is confusing and not transparent - Charging TPS and CTPS separately makes it one of the more expensive options - The website requires a sales conversation for accurate quotes - API documentation is not publicly available
Best for: Businesses that need a full data cleansing platform (not just TPS) and are comfortable with a sales-led purchasing process.
6. DataSoap (datasoap.co.uk)
Overview: DataSoap overlaps with the Datatopia/CallValidate offering and provides similar data quality services including TPS/CTPS checking. They market batch checking from as little as 75p per 1,000 numbers, though the all-in cost is higher when both registers are included.
Note: DataSoap and CallValidate/Datatopia share infrastructure and pricing models. We have listed them together above.
7. TPSCheck (tpscheck.uk)
Overview: TPSCheck is a modern, API-first TPS and CTPS checking service built for developers and businesses that want to integrate compliance checking into their own systems. Every API call returns TPS status, CTPS status, and phone intelligence data (line type, carrier, and location) in a single request. The API follows REST conventions with JSON responses and token-based authentication.
Pricing: Published transparently on the website. A free tier offers 50 checks per month with full API access. Subscription plans run from £29/month (Starter, 10,000 checks) to £199/month (Business, 500,000 checks). Pay-as-you-go credit packs start at £4 for 1,000 checks, with credits that never expire. Enterprise plans are available from £249/month. Annual billing saves 17%.
Full pricing details are on the pricing page.
Strengths: - Phone intelligence (line type, carrier, location) included free on every plan, including the free tier - Transparent pricing published on the website - Free tier with real API access, no credit card required - Modern REST/JSON API with clear documentation - TPS and CTPS checked together in a single API call - Batch checking for up to 100 numbers per request - Audit logs and compliance reports on paid plans - 28-day compliance tracking dashboard (Growth plan and above) - Pay-as-you-go option alongside subscriptions
Weaknesses: - Newer to the market than some competitors - No CRM-native integrations yet (Salesforce, Dynamics, HubSpot) - No desktop application or Excel add-in - Smaller customer base compared to established providers
Best for: Developers, startups, agencies, and SMBs who want a modern API with transparent pricing and phone intelligence included. Particularly strong for teams that want to integrate TPS checking into their own applications rather than using a web portal.

Pricing traps to watch out for
A few things to check before committing to any provider:
Separate TPS and CTPS charges. Some providers (notably Data8 and DataSoap) price TPS and CTPS as separate lookups. If you need both, which most businesses do, your effective cost doubles. Always check whether both registers are included.
"Contact sales" pricing. If a provider does not publish prices, the quote you receive may depend on how much they think you will pay. This is not necessarily bad for enterprises negotiating large contracts, but it is unhelpful for SMBs trying to compare options.
Minimum orders. Some credit-based services require a minimum purchase that may be larger than you need. Check whether you can start small.
API access as an add-on. A few providers offer API access only on higher-priced tiers, or charge extra for it. If you are building an integration, confirm API access is included in the plan you are considering.
Data beyond TPS status. If you also need line type, carrier, or location data, check whether that is included or billed separately. With some providers, phone intelligence is a completely separate product at additional cost.
Our recommendation
There is no single best provider for every situation.
If you are an enterprise team embedded in Salesforce or Dynamics 365, Data8 gives you native CRM integration that others cannot match. The extra cost may be justified by the workflow savings.
If you are running a large call centre that processes millions of numbers monthly and want a flat-rate budget, TPS Services or an unlimited subscription from 121ProData may make sense.
If you are a sole trader who needs to check a handful of numbers occasionally, the TPSChecker free tier (10 checks per day, no signup required) is hard to beat for sheer simplicity.
But if you are a developer, a growing business, or an agency that wants a modern API, transparent pricing, and phone intelligence included without extra charges, we genuinely believe TPSCheck is the strongest option in the UK right now. The free tier lets you evaluate it properly, the pricing scales predictably, and you get more data per check than any other provider at the same price point.
